A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine

slugs12g.-1000 #6-1000 22-2000 308-500 223-1000 45-1000 clips in;45,223,308(if your 308 isnt your primary subsistance tool, Ruger22 Of course depends on your steel. To build the minimum without going overboard and invalidate the MINIMUM I may add #1(12g.) I think the amounts are OK so far. any input from the gallery? |
Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
You're a little heavy on the 12 gauge and light on the .308
IMO |

Slugs are darn expensive; heres a revised listing; 00buck12g.-500rds slugs-500 #6-500 22-2000 308-1000 223-1000 45-1000 The focus is minimums . I was going to choose the #4 over the #6's but may be a little heavy for small game hunting. Hows it tweeking now? |
Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
From what I've read a 0000 is more effective than 00.

Gunner; how to determine quality ammo, what to look for ? I know Brass over zinc etc, no lacquering . Federal and Winchester better Ive heard. Will brands determine quality exclusively? |
Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
You're missing .22, for those times when you must poach a rabbit quietly. Also the easiest ammo to amass quickly. As for rifles, I reload and have enough supplies to reach out until the end of my time. Definitely need more shotgun shells though.

For quality stuff I would go with; .308 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...175&t=11082005 http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIte...Item=106049835 .223 http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIte...Item=106212604 (couldn't find any AP ammo but I'm sure there's still some available out there) .45 http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIte...Item=106410456 .22 http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/Brow...erOfResults=20 Eley is pretty good and there are others, just to have something better than the Winchester and Remington 550 packs. Those are okay or practicing with, maybe some squirrel hunting, etc, but if you really need food or have the need for a subsonic round - it's best to have some good stuff available keep an eye out for decent milsurp stuff on Sportsman's Guide - check the site regularly, good stuff sells out quick !! |
Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
Thanks for a direction Gunner--
Saum .22 is included see it? |
Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
For .308 the Lithuanian (GGG) on the market right now is supposed to be pretty good with excellent brass. Its packed in nice 200 rnd battle packs. I picked up 1k at the last gun show but haven't shot any yet. Its 2003-2004 production. As for AP and whatnot that stuffs cool to have but be sure of what you're buying. Theres alot of mild steel core stuff out there that people call AP and charge a ridiculous ammout for but its not AP.

Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
Is the floor under your ammo stash cracking? If not, you don't have enough!!!

Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
Generally agree with comments...
Depending on how many longarms you own or intend to acquire in the future(in military rounds .223, .308. 7x32x39, etc.) I would add more ammo to the total, say 2000-3000 PER RIFLE... And yes your original list had too much 12 gauge buck/slugs, IMO. As someone else said very succinctly regarding stockpiling too much buckshot/slugs for defense: "How many close-quarter encounters do you think you will actually survive?". |
Re: A rough but close MUST-HAVE ammo magazine
Change your buckshot to #1 or #4 (buck, not bird).
OO doesn't gain much in knock down power, and it gives up a lot in number of pellets. There's not much chance of hitting a man sized target beyond 35 yards with OO, as the 9 (.33 cal) pellets will scatter too far. On the other hand, 27 (.24 cal) #4 pellets will have a very high hit probability, all the way out past 50 yards. And yes, more rifle, less shotgun. I don't see very many situations where a slug would be required. |
